Beginners' Stage 1 Courses

Beginners’ Bookbinding Course

The course runs over two days, Saturday and Sunday, from 9am to 4 pm.

2013 Dates  and course codes are

August 3/4       JT1008     Fee is $200, including membership to June 30th 2014
December 7/8  JT7812    Fee is $175  including membership to June 30th, 2014

The course fee includes Membership of the Guild and you can then use our facilities on second and fourth weekend mornings and Wednesdays, and purchase supplies such as paste and glue at the Bindery. We also have an extensive library and books may be borrowed for four weeks.
We supply a basic kit as part of the fee: Bone folder, bookbinder’s sewing needle, 4 metres of sewing thread, a selection of headbands, some mull, about 30cm sewing tape, some spine lining card, book cloth  and some emery cloth. You will have use of  bindery equipment such as rulers, awls and brushes.
During the course you will learn basic skills and  safety procedures from tutor John Turner.
You will make a Japanese stab binding, a small notebook and a case bound blank book.
Materials for these are provided.
There will be some handouts provided.
Equipment and materials are available for purchase.

You should bring lunch, an HB or 2B pencil, a notebook, a large snap-blade knife preferably with a metal base for safety and a 30 cm metal ruler.
Clothes and shoes should be comfortable. If you have a barbecue apron or similar you may want to wear it as  the PVA glue is not easy to remove.

There is a fully equipped kitchen next to the bindery for those who wish to bring or heat their lunch. Otherwise there are places within walking distance for those who wish to buy, although there is less choice on Sunday. There are also coffee and tea making facilities in the Bindery, as well as an expresso coffee and tea machine and soft drink dispenser just outside.

You are welcome to photograph your own work as a record of your course, but not that of others or the tutor without permission.
